Road Trip Family Pics

Here are some more pictures from my dad's visit.

Notice the king crab hanging behind my dad's head! This was taken in our favorite restaurant in Puerto Natales called "La Burbuja."  It's cheap and tasty!

Perito Moreno Fun

Ok so I am only 3 months late posting but here goes. My dad and step-mom visited back in February. We took a road trip to El Calafate, Argentina. The same place we went last February. We had a great trip and stayed in a great hotel, using a GROUPON. Yes, we even have Groupons here in at the end of the earth.  The main tourist attraction is the glacier, Perito Moreno.

Olivia loves to hike. Here is she leading the way on a trail:

Victoria, more interested in attempting to suck on the baby carrier than looking at that kick-ass glacier behind her:

Same kick-ass glacier, different angles:

Olivia, unfortunately got sick with a fever and was out of commission for about 24 hours. Here in this photo you can see it's starting to hit her. Poor thing!

Both girls taking a nap. Olivia did the same thing last year (wearing the SAME pants!!!):

Trying to be *artistic.* Check out the reflection in my glasses:

Beautiful water, heading back to the car on the special walkways:

Reason #23

Went for a run on the bike path along the water today, half a block from my house. Saw dolphins jumping in the Strait of Magellan. Didn't get a photograph so I don't have anything to post, but you get the picture, right?

Add it to the list to print

Dad and step-mom visited us last week. I have lots of cool pictures to share but we are preparing for a trip so I don't have a lot of time. Fernando, Victoria and I are Boston bound for a seafood fair (anyone want to buy a container or two of king crab???) and Olivia is headed to Santiago to stay with my mother in-law. And then all of us are meeting up for two more weeks in Santiago because Olivia has to apply for preschool for 2013 now (the idea is to move back to Santiago in 2013... fingers crossed!!!). (Don't even get me started on the ridiculousness of a 3 year old having to "apply" to preschool, one year ahead of time. The parents also have an interview...)

In the mean time, here's another family photo, your everyday family photo, you know, in front of a glacier.

Reason #24

Really cool family photos...

Love that getting in the car and driving can lead such cool places, with mountains and king penguins in the background.

These need to be blown up...poster size... and hung on the wall!

Sheep Crossing

One of the times we went to Porvenir back in November, we were unable to take the ferry back on the day we had planned because it was completely full. So instead we went "the long way around" which means driving through Tierra del Fuego to the narrow part of the Strait and taking the short ferry and then driving all the way back around to Punta Arenas. It's a long drive.  This particular time, there was a sheep crossing right in front of us. Here are some of the photos.

Mama and baby sheep making their way across:

The dog rounding them up:

As Fernando stood outside the car, snapping away, picture after picture, the girls and I waited and watched the seemingly quiet crossing from within the car. He then motioned for me to roll the window down and this is what we heard:

Those sheep don't look like they are "talking" in the pictures, but man are they noisy!

Me, two days ago...

In the middle of summer...

I may have been slightly overdressed but I certainly was not sweating...
You can never have enough faux fur, right???

A New Park Experience

Two weekends ago, we took a walk to a park near our house that we had never been to. It's about a 10-15 minute walk which doesn't sound so far but when nice days are few and far between, you tend to drive to the park and freeze your a-s-s off while your kid runs around and plays. So the weather seemed nice and we took off with Olivia in the stroller (she has taken a renewed interest in sitting in a stroller since you-know-who came along) and Victoria in the baby carrier. In the basket under the stroller, I stuffed in a blanket to sit on, some badminton rackets and birdie and some toys for Victoria. About three minutes into the walk, the sun went behind a cloud. Hmmm, a little chilly now. About three minutes later, the sky turned dark and the wind starting wooshing around. Another three minutes passed and it began to sprinkle. By the time we got to the park, it was raining and windy. A blanket to sit on??? How could I have been so naive? I guess that those three weeks in Santiago screwed up my weather expectations. I have NEVER sat on a blanket at a park here!
So Fernando and Victoria hurried back home but there was no convincing Olivia. We stayed at the park as the weather worsened and she paid it no mind. In fact, she had her first horse ride!

I like this picture below because it shows the Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego.

Happy little girl finishing her horse ride.

The horse ride was followed by a 15 minute jump on a huge trampoline because despite the weather, Olivia was out for a good time. (Notice she is the ONLY one on the trampoline. Everyone else had packed up and headed home at this point.)

The weather started to clear for a minute:

Next time no badminton (ha!), just a winter coat, hat and rain jacket...just in case!

Tired girl

Olivia has not been going to her morning day care center since the beginning of November. After a long long break, this Wednesday was her first day back. Historically, she is not a big fan of day care. The main (really the only) reason is because I am not there. Other than being mama-free, she loves the activities and kids.  Well I am happy to report that not only has re-entry to morning day care gone well, she is so happy with it that she asked to stay for longer! Woohoo! She has grown and matured so much in the past couple of months. Here she is, post day care, a tired little girl (rocking the Little Mermaid with polka dots and zebra stripes cause any other way wouldn't be right).

Here's hoping for a happier, more fun year at day care!

Reason #25

After 3 weeks of sun and fun in Santiago, I've been feeling really kind of negative about living in the south, in the cold, away from friends and family. Soooo, in order to survive start feeling better about life at the end of the earth, I am going to periodically post reasons why living here is good. I'm shooting for 25 reasons so, counting backwards, here is the first one.

I get to wear these bad boys YEAR ROUND.
